There is a quote by Hans Christian Anderson that says “where words fail, music speaks.” This says so much about why music is often a good choice for our kiddos. When you think about development and our bodies, we are filled with music. Our bodies are music in the form of rhythm from our heartbeat, melody in early coos from babies to various vocalizations as we age, to the underlying frequency of our nervous system. Little ones respond naturally to music, moving their bodies to the beat and learning to talk through singing. Past the fundamentals of how our bodies respond to music, our brains also respond. Music is the only activity that activates both hemispheres simultaneously and can light up multiple areas at the same time as well. When you listen to a song your body tunes into the rhythm by the way you begin to move your head or body, your heart has shown to respond to the rhythm and the heart rate has been seen to increase or decrease to coincide with the tempo of a song. You mind also tunes into the lyrics, if there are lyrics, and begins to decipher and memorize them. Finally, the music can attach to a special moment or memory to provide heightened memory in the future when the song is heard again. With all that music naturally does to our bodies, it can be a natural building block on developing skills for our little loves.
